Basic 12 Lead EKG Interpretation Course
This course is for those who want to become more confident and comfortable with their use of the 12-lead ECG with potential STEMI patients. You will first develop a systematic approach to recognize genuine ST segment elevation when present. Next, once genuine ST segment has been identified the you will learn to balance out the likelihood of the elevation being produced by STEMI or one of the STEMI impostors (non-infarct causes of ST elevation). These fundamental concepts are solidified through extensive practice and case studies. Also covered are important topics such as “Who gets a 12-lead” and how to rapidly obtain an ECG this is clear and accurate.
Date: March 12, 2009 8:30am – 5:30pm

12 Lead EKG Interpretation: Beyond the Basics
This course is intended to take providers already familiar with the essentials of STEMI recognition to the next level. You will learn how to recognize evidence of new onset Left Bundle Branch Block (the other indication for immediate reperfusion). In addition, you will learn how to utilize additional lead ECGs to not only better identify STEMI but to also help tailor the management of STEMI complications such as hypotension, Chest pain and AV block. Also discussed are strategies to improve your identification of the top STEMI impostors AND know what ECG findings suggest STEMI even in the presence of a potential impostor. Included are extensive review and practice sessions to help you retain these concepts.
Date: March 13, 2009 8:30am – 5:30pm

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this program participants will be able to:
Introduction
• Discuss common concerns regarding prehospital 12-lead electrocardiography
• Identify solutions to address real-world issues and concerns
• List three reasons advantages of a prehospital 12-lead ECG
• List three ways that a prehospital 12-lead can reduce to time to coronary artery patency
Module 1
• Identify the components of a 12-lead ECG
• Define Q wave, R wave, S wave, and patholologic Q wave
• Locate the J-point and ST segment
• Recognize ST segment elevation in 2 contiguous leads
• Recognize and Localize the ECG pattern for AMI
Module 2
• Recognize need for Skin prep to reduce ECG artifact
• Describe procedures to prepare skin for ECG
• Identify 4 source of artifact
• Confirm accuracy of ECG regarding frequency response, calibration, paper speed and limb lead placement
Module 3
• Define and list the Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS)
• Describe the pathophysiology of the ACS
• Categorize the clinical presentation of ACS as classic, atypical chest pain, or anginal equivalent
• Discuss the role of risk factors in suspecting ACS
• Correlate common theraputic interventions with specific mechanisms of action
Module 4
• Define Acute Reperfusion therapy, and list 2 major types
• Discuss importance of obtaining a 12-lead ECG early and often
• List the 3 ECG subsets for ACS
• Identify the features of BBB
• Given a variety of ECGs, place each in the appropriate subset
Module 5
• Describe the “typical” distribution of coronary arteries
• Identify proximal occlusion of LCA and RCA
• Discuss treatment for proximal LCA versus proximal RCA occlusion
• Indentify indications for additional leads (V4R – V6R, V7 – V9)
Module 6
• Differentiate LBBB from RBBB
• Describe ECG recognition criteria for; Ventricular rhythms, Ventricular Aneurysm, Benign Early Repolarization, Pericarditis, the Digitalis Effect
• Identify the most frequent imitators of ACS
• Discuss significance of an imitator when managing a suspect ACS patient
